t’s Been Found Omega-3 Fatty Acids Help to Lower HbA1c Levels!

download (68)Omega-3 fatty acids or linolenic acids are recommended for treating Type 2 diabetes, but how they work remains a mystery. In a study reported on by the Iran Journal of Public Health in March of 2016, scientists at Tehran University looked at how the omega-3s might affect particular enzymes. They could not find any effect on the enzymes, but the good news is the omega-3 fatty acids did lower their HbA1c levels.

A total of ninety people who had previously been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes acted as participants and were divided into two groups…

  1. the diabetic participants in the treatment group took 2714 mg of omega-3 fatty acids each day for two months.
  2. the other participants who too had Type 2 diabetes, were given a placebo.

There was no change in enzyme activity, but the HbA1c reading was significantly lowered in the omega-3 group.

  • walnuts – 1 ounce, 562 mg
  • walnut oil – 1 tablespoon, 1404 mg
  • chia seeds – 1 ounce, 4915 mg

One teaspoon of flaxseed oil provides about the same amount of omega-3 fat as the study participants were given. A half ounce of chia seeds would do the same.
